Lessons & Courses Why Choose Automatic? Why is choosing to learn in an automatic so taboo? You should not feel pressured into always choosing to learn in a manual!!!! A large percentage of drivers opt to drive Automatic having passed in a manual .... And once they do some never want to drive manual again!
Frequent statements I hear But if you pass in an automatic that's all you can drive?
If you pass in a manual you have the choice true but if you are just getting stressed with the gears and clutch then why waste money struggling?
You're weak/a cheat if you learn in an automatic.
Not at all! If the gears and/or clutch control are holding you back....You're being sensible! It might take you only half the time to pass in an automatic as a manual once you have removed that stress.
I have witnessed numerous pupils struggling to co-ordinate clutch control and gears transfer to the automatic and with new found abilities stride confidently towards the test.
One pupil who had been adamant about not giving in and going over to automatic because of peer pressure struggled in a manual for the best part of a year. One lesson my was advice was heeded and I was requested to bring the automatic next time "Just to try..".
Within 15 minutes that pupil was declaring undying love for the person who had invented automatics and, without further thought to any peer pressure, passed the Driving test within three months.
What about an emergency? I have a manual on the drive and they won't be able to drive it?
In an emergency you would most likely call an ambulance and there is a considerable possibility that under the circumstances the person might be too stressed to be able to drive safely anyway.
Automatics are more expensive...and the choice is limited?
New they cost around the same price as a diesel car and second hand markets is not much different to manual. Plus most cars nowadays have an automatic model
There aren't many second hand automatics about.
None of my pupils have had any trouble finding vehicles
IMPORTANT - THE AUTOMATIC IS NOT A COP OUT AND DOES NOT DRIVE FOR YOU!!!
Choosing to learn in an Automatic usually alleviates the stresses associated with changing gear and clutch control thereby allowing you to focus on the road and ensuing situations so YES you may get to the learning part faster once the stress is under control.
It must be remembered that the actual handling of the vehicle is only a small percentage of learning to drive MORE IMPORTANTLY you still have to be able to handle yourself and make effective decisions regarding the situations you meet in order to comply with the DSA standard, pass the Driving Test and be a safe driver for life.
There is no magic wand.....How fast you learn is still down to YOU!
